One of my friends applied for citizenship 7 years ago when he got married (for love). In the last year, he and his wife, who was born here, have been having a lot of problems. Recently he had to go back to Mexico for an appointment on his application and was granted a 1 yr Visa for now while the citizen application is still in process. Since he got back, their problems have gotten worse. He wants to get a divorce, but she keeps threatening to mess up his application if he leaves her. What can he do? Is she actually able to stop the application process? He is a very hard worker and really deserves to stay here. Any serious suggestions are much appreciated.
He wasn’t a permanent resident before. He just received his 1yr VISA at the end of July 2007. INS sent him his alien card )good till 2017) and a letter stating that he’d be receiving a social security number, but the VISA is only good through next July.

Two US citizens got married in Italy, but never filed marriege in the US. Now we are trying to figure out the fastest way to file a divorce. Would that be filing a divorce in California where we both reside? In such a case, do we still have to divide our assets and property into half?

My friend is from Syria. He lived in the states for awhile and married a US citizen. He found out she was on drugs and she left. He wasn’t able to find her anywhere, so he moved back to Syria. How does he file for a divorce? Does he have to come back here to do it? Thank you.

One of the 2 requirements to apply for citinzenship is have 3 years with a Green Card and remain married with an US citizen. I fall in that category, by my quesiton is after applying for Citizenship…starting the divorce paperwork…That won’t affect my application with inmigration?
I checked USCIS already is nothing there…
    Thanks!
iF I was a scum as u said paying for paperwork I woulnd’t be speaking english either.
That’s true, the people in this country doesn’t deserve a truly hard worker, honest like many southamericans coming to this land to make a honest living.. like us.
Bunch a rednecks! and truly thank you to the persons who answer me without prejudices.

    Gay marriage?

Despite your personal beliefs, how do you guys interpret why gays can’t marry? If our government was sticking to the constitutional law of "separation of church and state", would this even be an issue? Call it whatever you want…civil unions, domestic partnership, marriage, etc–I’m not here to debate how the legal binding should be dubbed. But why are homosexuals being classified as second rate citizens here? Where’s the Martin Luther King Jr of the Gay Rights Movement? Gay people have heartbeats too.
Okay, also. For religious based folk, please keep in mind that this isn’t a religious question—separation of church and state is a governmental policy that you’ve chosen to accept being an American, and I would prefer all religious beliefs kept out of this. Whether you follow the Torah, taoism, various interpretations of christianity, hinduism, or the Church of Elvis Presley–America is a melting pot of ideologies. That’s um, part of makes this country so fantastic?

How to divorce someone that lives in another country?

My GFs ex-husband lives in Mexico. They are divorced legally in Mexico even though he did it illegaly. That is the problem because if we get married and she tries to become a citizen they will say how is it possible you got divorced from someone while you were in this country. So my question is how do you divorce someone with out them being there? If he doesn’t sign papers or doesn’t come to court how is it possible to get a divorce?
